The Snake Experience by Nick Sutton

Explorations

There is special concern for the plight of the Jamaican boa (Epicrates subflavus), a beautiful yet critically endangered snake that faces heavy local persecution and is also in danger of losing key habitat due to destructive mineral mining efforts. One such imperiled area is known as the "cockpit country", a dense tropical forested zone carpeting a vast expanse of limestone hills near the island's center; a true sea of green. Many species of flora and fauna abound in the cockpit country and some have only recently been discovered by the scientific community. To learn more about how you can help save this amazing place, please go to cockpitcountry.com.

Much of Nick's time in Jamaica is spent exploring "inna de bush" with machette in hand and traversing difficult terrain to observe, photograph and document species of interest in an effort to help better understand their role in the island's ecosystem. All relevant data is then shared with local biologists to assist in expanding knowledge of species distribution. In addition, the significance of educating local farmers, often through personal relationships, cannot be overstated. Teaching them the vitally important role that snakes play in controlling rat populations can help greatly in turning the tide of public awareness about wildlife conservation.

Nick has made several trips to Jamaica and is fascinated by more than just the nine snake species encountered there: some other brilliant inhabitants include gigantic centipedes, bizarre cave dwelling frogs, radiant caribbean birds and delicate orb weaving spiders.
