The Snake Experience by Nick Sutton

Local Snakes

Pituophis catenifer

It is a true constrictor and helps keep explosive rodent populations in check. With the help of a specially adapted glottis (windpipe), it and other members of its genus have one of the loudest hisses of any snake. This loud hiss is extremely intimidating and an effective defense against predators.

As is clear from the name, this species preys upon gophers and other small rodents, often taking refuge from the heat in their burrows. Unfortunately, because they superficially resemble rattlesnakes, they are often needlessly killed by people.

Cool Fact:

Gopher snakes hibernate every year in communal den sites, often sharing space with rattlesnakes, racers, and whipsnakes.
