Thamnophis ordinoides
This garter is smaller than the common, seldom exceeding two feet, but has a much more diverse range of colors and patterns. It also does not exist statewide, which can help in identification. Like all garter snakes, they lay no eggs, but give birth to live young. They hibernate through the winter sometimes in large numbers in suitable locations like talus or deep cracks in rock. As a defense against predators, they may release the contents of their cloaca onto the offender when handled. The smell is unpleasant and is sure to remind the offender to think twice before considering it for a meal again.
